The Lost Art of the Handwritten Card

There is a particular kind of greeting card that people don’t throw away or recycle.
You’ll find them tucked into the backs of drawers, slipped between the pages of books, and sometimes tied with ribbons into small bundles. They may be preserved in keepsake boxes for years, for no particular reason other than these are cards that feel worth saving.
Caldwell’s Miscellaneous Fancy Goods' new greeting card collection was made for people who appreciate that instinct - the one that makes you save a card, tuck it into a mirror frame, or prop it up on the mantel.
The designs on our cards were sourced from my personal collection and printed with care onto archival paper. Each of the images carries ideas and symbolism that would have been familiar to many people in the 19th century such as:
- Roses for love
- Pansies for thinking of you
- Daisies for sweetness and innocence
- And a willow tree for sorrow
When you select one of our cards, we hope it delights two people: you as the giver, and your intended recipient. We hope that it transports you both, even if just for a moment, to a beautiful place and time. We hope that it offers connection that will be remembered long after the envelope is opened.
Why a card like this still matters
We are not short on ways to reach people these days. We are short on ways to communicate that feel like they took a bit of thought and effort, and that ask for a small amount of attention in return.
The effort and attention are part of the point. It's why a card might get tucked into a drawer for years while electronic messages tend to get buried or forgotten in minutes. Sending a physical card is a small, old-fashioned act of kindness and intention. It says, “you matter to me."
